When it comes to building links for a website, many know that a great place to begin is with a solid list of web directories.  There are literally thousands of free directories available, in addition to many premium directories, which accept submissions after passing review.  Before one starts submitting, there are some directory submission considerations to follow.

Prior to submitting any website to web directories, it is very important to make sure the site being submitted is free from code errors, pop-unders and over bloated ads.  Directory editors dislike these problems and will be given no choice but to to reject the submission.  Sites that give value to visitors normally have a greater acceptance rate.

The days of submitting the same titles and descriptions to directories have been over for a long time.  Website owners should focus on quality submissions, regardless if the directory is free or not.  Those that submit the identical submission set to directories are typically the same ones that note submitting to web directories does not benefit their search engine optimization efforts.  Search engines do not like similar content, and most have become efficient at discounting the value of duplicate submissions that are listed.  So to get the best results from your efforts, everyone should concentrate on highly unique and quality submissions.

Spelling and punctuation are also very important factors for the submitter to cope with.  Prior to submitting a site to any web directory, it is important to do a spell check.  With that in mind, never submit a website that is using all caps.  The idea is to give the web directory editor every reason to approve the submitted site in their web directory.

The category positioning is extremely important for directory submissions to help ones search engine optimization efforts.  For example, if you are submitting a website to directories, chances are it would be better placed in a sub-category instead of a top level category like the society directory.  Submitting to the best sub category will greatly improve the approval rate from editors.  Also, the directories using SEF urls will also assist your site if it is properly placed in the web directory.

When performing a true manual submission campaign, it is extremely important for the submitter to be patient.  Creating quality submissions is a time consuming process.  The results from a manual directory submission campaign will not be immediately noticed, but over an extended period of time will improve ones link popularity and overall rankings in the primary search engines.
