Before going into staff training,  you must first assess what your business needs are.   Also, you have to weigh whether your company will benefit by introducing to your staff new ideas and teaching them new skills.    You also have to determine in what areas are your staffs strengths and weaknesses.   Thereby you can assess in which particular area they would need to improve on.

To get the needed information for the assessment of their strengths and weaknesses,  some effective methods are:   management observations, employee surveys, customer comments, etc.  This will clarify the exact areas in which your employee would need more training.

If you now have an idea where your staff needs improvement, you must now determine what kind of training would suit your company best.   You may choose from internal training or external training.

Internal trainings are usually conducted during office hours and within the company premises.   In most cases, a team of experienced trainers with the right expertise and resources would be invited to train the staff in-house.   In-house trainings have their certain advantages and disadvantages.

The following are some of the advantages of internal training:

  •  Costs less as the company can save more form transportation expenses.
  • Scheduled for a time that suits your business.
  • Tailored to suit your business needs.
  • Time-efficient because your employees do not have to spend extra time traveling.
  •  Can be conveniently attended by every employee, even those with family commitments, since the trainings are conducted during work hours.

However, it also has its share of disadvantages:

  •  Since in-house trainings are usually conducted for the whole staff, the operation of the business might be disrupted or placed on hold.
  • The company premises might not have the conducive atmosphere for training or the resources might not be sufficient.

If the internal training does not suit your business,  you may also choose to send your staff to attend external trainings conducted elsewhere.   In external trainings, the training is usually conducted in a large space and attended by the different staff from different companies.   The trainers are usually a team of experts in a specific field.   External trainings also have their share of advantages and disadvantages.

The advantages of external training can be:

  •  The employees can interact and share their view with their counterparts fro other companies.
  •  The employees may listen and learn better in a place away from their usual work environment.
  •  The needed facilities and resources can be readily provided.

The disadvantages of sending the staff to external trainings are:

  • The company would have to spend more for employee transportation.
  •  Those employees with prior family commitments may not be able to attend.
  • Training the entire staff all at the same time can disrupt the company business.

Measuring the impact of the training in your business will help you derive the maximum benefit out of these trainings.   This will also teach you how to properly integrate these training courses to suit your business needs.

Other than these, proper staff management, ensuring good staff policies, careful strategizing are primary keys in achieving your business objectives and reaching your business targets.
